After blood has been drawn, it is tested for ABO group (blood type), Rh type (positive or negative), and for any unexpected red blood cell antibodies that may cause problems in a recipient.  To ensure the safety of all human-derived biological products and components, we screen our donors for evidence of donor infections according to AABB and FDA guidelines.  The specific tests currently performed are:

• Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)
• Hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc)
• Hepatitis C antibody (anti-HCV)
• HIV 1/2 antibody plus Group O antibody (anti-HIV-1 and anti-HIV-2)
• HTLV I/II antibody (anti-HTLV-I and anti-HTLV-II)
• Serologic test for syphilis
• Antibody test for Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas disease)
• Nucleic acid testing (NAT) – includes HBV, HCV, and HIV-1
• NAT for West Nile virus (WNV)
• Cytomegalovirus (CMV) testing (upon request)

Testing is mandatorily performed for all transfusable products.  Testing for research products and cellular therapy collections are performed upon request.
